Postal Index Number (PIN) or PIN Code is a 6 digit code of Post Office numbering used by India Post. The PIN was introduced on August 15, 1972. There are 9 PIN regions in the country. The first 8 are geographical regions and the digit 9 is reserved for the Army Postal Service. The first digit indicates one of the regions. The first 2 digits together indicate the sub region or one of the postal circles. The first 3 digits together indicate a sorting / revenue district. The last 3 digits refer to the delivery Post Office. Many localities are covered by a delivery Post office.

e-Payment service is launched in the year 2006 and presently is available at 22,331 Post offices throughout the country. e-Payment is a smart option for businesses and organizations to collect their bills or other payments on-line through Post office network. The amounts collected will be paid though a single window to the biller. Facility of data download for the biller is also available. As on 25-10-2013 there are 1,443 billers are using this service. About 1,00,000 e-Payment transactions take place every day.
