The data refers to number of schools according to school building in which majority of classes are held. It provides details of availability of infrastructural facilities such as pucca, partly pucca, Kuchcha, tent, open Space in different categories of schools. A school building is to be treated as pucca if it has its wall made of Burnt Bricks, stones, cement, concrete or timber, plywood, artificial wood of synthetic material and PVC, and roof made of brick, stones,timber,plywood, bamboo, artificial wood of synthetic material etc. Partly Pucca buildings are those whose walls made of material used for pucca building and roof is made of the materials other than those used for pucca building such as bamboo, grass, thatch etc. Kuchcha Building are those in which walls and roof made of bamboos, mud, grass, reeds, thatch and loosely packed stones.

The authority, which runs a school, determines its type of management. The type of management considered for the survey are : Government school which is run by the state/Central Government or public sector undertaking or an Autonomous Organisation completely financed by the Government; Local body school which is run by Panchayati Raj/Local body Institution such as Zilla Parishad, Municipal Committee, notified Area Committee and Cantonment Board; Private Aided schools which is run by individual or private organization and receives grant from government or local body; Private Unaided school school which is managed by an individual or private organization and does not receive any grant either from government or local body. The data signifies the availability of schools of different level(Primary/Upper Primary/Secondary/Higher Secondary/Degree College having XI-XII class) according to type of management like Government, Local Body, Private Aided, Private Unaided in Rural/Urban/Total area at all India level.

According to the national pattern, A school having classes up to V is termed as Primary School, class from VI to VIII is termed as Upper Primary School, Class from IX to X is termed as Secondary and Class XI-XII is termed as Higher Secondary. A habitation is a distinct cluster of houses existing in a compact and contiguous manner, with a local name and its population should not be less than 25 in plain area, and not less than 10 in hilly/dessert/sparsely populated areas. In case there exists more than one such cluster of houses in a village, they will not be treated as separate habitations unless the convenient walking distance between them is more than 200 mts. The data refers to Number of Habitations Having Schooling Facility at primary and upper primary stage within them or not within or beyond one kilometer at primary stage and 3 KM in upper primary stage.
