Ministry of Tourism has voluntary scheme for Classifying/ Re-classifying the Hotels/ Restaurants/ Air Catering Units/ Time Share Resorts/Apartments/ Convention Centre/ Bed & Breakfast etc. under various categories. The aims and objectives of this scheme is to provide world class standard services to the tourists. The Ministry of Tourism has revised the classification / Re-classification guidelines w.e.f. 28.06.2012.

Ministry of Tourism has a scheme of approving the service providers of Travel Trade. The aims and objectives of this scheme are to encourage quality, standard and service in these categories. This is a voluntary scheme open to all bonafide agencies to bring them under organized sector. The Ministry of Tourism has revised the guidelines for grant of approval / extension as Travel Agents, Inbound Tour Operators, Adventure Tour Operators, Domestic Tour Operators & Tourist Transport Operators with effect from 18th July 2011 and lately on 02nd January 2012.

Foreign tourist arrivals refer to the number of arrivals of tourists/visitors. An individual who makes multiple trips to the country is counted each time as a new arrival. Foreign Exchange Earnings from tourism are the receipts of the country as a result of consumption expenditure, i.e. payments made for goods and services acquired, by foreign visitors in the economy out of the foreign currency brought by them. The number of Domestic Tourist Visits to different States and Union Territories (UTs) are being compiled based on the information received from them.
