The International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED) is designed to serve as a statistical framework for assembling, compiling and presenting comparable indicators and statistics of education both within individual countries and internationally. It presents standard concepts, definitions and classifications. ISCED covers all organized and sustained learning opportunities for children, youth and adults including those with special needs education, irrespective of the institution or entity providing them or the form in which they are delivered.

Education Guarantee Scheme (EGS) Centers : Alternative schools in unserved habitations where there is no formal school within the radius of 1 kilometer and at least 15-25 children of 6-14 years age group who are not going to schools are available. Alternative and Innovative Education (AIE) Centers. The centers set up for very specific, difficult groups of ‘out of school’ children for mainstreaming or otherwise, under the AIE component of the EGS&AIE scheme, are termed as Alternative & Innovative Education Centers. Some of the examples of AIE Centers are seasonal hostels for migrating children, condensed/bridge courses/ back to school camps for mainstreaming out of school children and to achieve competencies appropriate for their age in a short period, residential camps/drop–in centers for street and slum children.

Government: Central and State Governments and Organisations established and/ or wholly funded by them (e.g. Kendriya Vidalaya Sangthan, Navidaya Vidalayas Samiti, Board of Secondary Education, Central/State Public Sector Undertakings). Local Bodies : Panchayats (as defined in Art 243 read with 243 B of the Constitution), Municipalities ( as defined in Article 243 P read with 243 Q of the Constitution), Cantonment Boards, Town Area Committee, and any other bodies of local self government constituted under a law. Private Aided: An institution managed by an individual, trust, society, or other private organisation and receiving regular maintenance grant from Government or local body. Private Unaided: An institution managed by an individual, trust, society or other private organisation and not receiving regular maintenance grant from Government , or local body . An institution which is in receipt of one-time ad-hoc grant for a specific purpose like building construction, strengthening of library or laboratory facilities, one-time subsidy towards teacher salary etc., but not receiving regular maintenance grant, may be treated as an unaided institution.
